New Audi R8 Will Generate 610 Horsepower
Performance Specs of 2016 Audi R8 V10 Engine
Just last week, we took a look at the impressive dual-clutch automatic transmission of the upcoming 2016 Audi R8, and although the announcement of the automatic gearbox is definitely exciting, there is another component of the drivetrain that deserves some acknowledgement as well. That, of course, is the engine found in the redesigned R8. With a closer look at the powertrain, it’s clear to see exactly what we mean.
Ten cylinders within the engine of an R8 is not a new phenomenon. The supercar has come equipped with V10 engines in the past, and there have also been smaller, V8 engines on the option list. Based on demand and on sales numbers of past models, the V8 engine has been dropped for the 2016 model year, meaning that the V10 will be the only option in the redesigned model. We don’t have any issue with that, however.
The performance specs of the 2016 Audi R8 V10 engines are undoubtedly impressive. The base form of the ten-cylinder powertrain is able to shell out as much as 540 horsepower, and if you opt for the Plus model, which has a slightly more refined engine, the output can get as high as 610 horsepower, which is a great deal more than the R8 has ever been able to achieve before. Needless to say, the R8 is quick.
When firing on all cylinders, the R8 is able to run the zero-to-sixty sprint in as little as 3.2 seconds and can hit top speeds of 205 mph. As we told you in our coverage of the transmission, the dual-clutch automatic comes mated to both the base and Plus version of the engine and helps to send all power to both sets of axles with the quattro all-wheel drive system. For added performance, 100 percent of the engine’s torque can be directed to the rear wheels. This makes the R8 a master at conquering even the tightest of turns.
With such an impressive amount of horsepower and torque, all of which can be directed to the wheels that you need it to go, there is no arguing that the performance specs of the Audi R8 are more impressive than ever before. Unfortunately, if you want to put them through the paces for yourself, you will have to wait as the 2016 Audi R8 release date has not arrived yet. It is, however, expected to come soon, so be sure to check back here on the Audi Royal Oak blog in the near future for more information on its official release.
