Putting a premium twist on the VW Tiguan SUV, Audi introduces the brand-new Q3 to the compact crossover market. With sporty styling and enhanced fuel economy, the Q3 is a welcomed addition especially in these times where gas prices keep rising. Touted as a versatile companion for everyday life, Audi sets the standards in many aspects with the Q3 from its body, drivetrain, and chassis to its state-of-the-art assistance and multimedia systems.

Off the line, three different 4-cylinder engines will be available: one TDI and two TFSI units. Each will be equipped with direct injection, turbocharging, start-stop, and energy-recovery systems. Power outputs range between 140 hp to 211 hp and these engines will be as efficient as they are powerful. The most frugal of them being the front-wheel drive, six-speed 2.0 TDI that will average less than 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (45.23 US mpg.) The most power comes from the 208-hp 2.0 TFSI with permanent quattro all-wheel drive and seven-speed S-tronic that sprints from 0 to 60 in less than 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 143 mph.

Drivers have the option of supplementing standard equipment with a number of luxury options. Examples include adaptive light technology for the xenon plus headlights that illuminate the road ahead, even around the corners, and an enhanced parking assist system that alerts drivers to obstacles even if they are off to the side. Further enhancements include an entire set of infotainment components. Highlights include a hard drive based MMI navigation plus system and the Bose surround sound system with illuminated woofers up front. Features to be added in the near future are an online Bluetooth car phone, paired with a WLAN hotspot to provide driver and passengers with full internet connectivity.

Underpinning the whole works is a chassis with four-link rear suspension, electromechanical power steering, optional adaptive dampers, and brakes made to handle the Q3’s sportier tendencies. With its lightweight design due to the use of aluminum and high-strength steels, the base version of the Audi Q3 weighs less than 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lbs) which might lead you to think it is only a light-duty. The reality is it has a towing weight of up to 4,400 pounds.
