2016 Audi R8 Dual-Clutch Automatic Transmission

Just last week, Audi unveiled their next-generation 2016 Audi R8, and although we are extremely excited about the options that the supercar will come with, there is one announcement that took us by surprise. It was recently made known that the R8 would be made available exclusively with a dual-clutch automatic transmission, meaning that the manual transmission of the past has been discontinued for the new model.

Seeing as manual transmissions are typically inevitable offerings in sports cars such as the R8, it came as a bit of a shock to many that it didn’t make the cut for the redesigned model, but as the head of Audi, Heinz Hollerweger, explained, the manual transmission was pulled from the option list because it has become less desirable. Simply put, the dual-clutch automatic transmission is the better of the two options.

Manual transmissions gained traction because they provided a more controlled performance. The vehicle could not properly operate without human interference, and as it was a much more involved experience, there were many who preferred to purchase the transmissions. With advances in technology, automatic transmissions have become the standard as they are more efficient and able to shift much more quickly.

As Hollerweger said when discussing the switch to an exclusive automatic option, the decision can be found in the lap times of the R8. A manual gearbox simply cannot match the times of an automatic one.

Another one of the reasons that Audi decided to pull the manual transmission from the R8 is because there wasn’t much of a demand for it. In the past, the manually-shifting models only accounted for about five percent of sales, which goes to show just how effective, and popular the dual-clutch automatic really is.

So, if you’ve been wondering what happened to the manual transmission of the Audi R8. That is your answer. Audi didn’t just pull it for any old reason. There was logic behind the decision, and seeing as the 2016 Audi R8 dual-clutch automatic transmission only helps to increase the performance of the supercar, we have absolutely no complaints. We can’t wait to test out the abilities of the new gearbox for ourselves.
